Donald Reutershan - 2006 State Supervisor of the Year
Donald H. Reutershan, Jr., Education Specialist in Modern and Classical Languages
at the Maine Department of Education, was recognized in November, 2006 as the State
Supervisor of the Year. Mr. Reutershan received the award from Pearson/Prentice
Hall at the annual meetings of the National Council of State Supervisors For
Languages (NCSSFL) and the National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign
Languages (NADSFL) in Nashville, Tennessee.
Don Reutershan has excelled in the areas of leadership, innovative contributions,
and service at the state, regional, and national levels. He has been the driving
force behind curriculum and assessment initiatives in the state of Maine since 1985,
receiving the Foreign Language Association of Maine Leadership award in 2001. At
the regional level, he served as member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast
Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) and its Conference Chair.
Nationally, he was a member of the ACTFL Executive Council and its Program Chair.
He was the President of NCSSFL 2004-2005 and is currently its Immediate Past
President. He also led the first NCSSFL Delegation to the People’s Republic of
China in June, 2005.
Don is called “the face of foreign languages” in Maine. He is known for his
graciousness and charm. As one of his colleagues writes, “Not only does everybody
in the state (and beyond) know him; he also knows everybody else. No matter whether
you see him in the lobby at a conference in Washington, DC, or in the local grocery
store, he greets you by name and with a pleasant smile. He’ll ask how things are
going and cares what the answer is.” |
